ABOUT NORTHEAST MOUNTAIN PEOPLE
Northeast Mountain People, launched November 2020, is a hiking forum authored/edited by journalist Paul-William Gagnon (with occasional guest authors). It features planned and impromptu interviews with hikers ("Mountain People"), articles on the practice and philosophy of hiking, hiking trip reports and destination writing, gear and literature reviews, and occasional parody humor ("The White Mountain Parsnip"). NEMP primarily covers hiking in the northeast United States with occasional forays into eastern Canada and places further abroad. NEMP takes a "humanistic" approach to the topic of hiking and its interview subjects.

ABOUT PAUL-WILLIAM
I grew up exploring the mountains and natural areas of New England and eastern Canada (where my grandparents emigrated from). As I child, I spent my summers on a lake cabin in Maine and then a cottage on the ocean in New Hampshire, and I explored the woods behind my home in Massachusetts. My family took me on trips to parks and natural areas where we mostly viewed nature from the road. I remember feeling intensely curious about the trail signs but was forbidden to venture far. |
As soon as I was old enough to drive and buy a car (late '80s), I travelled to the mountains of New England to hike. There were no hikers in my family; what I learned about hiking, backpacking, and nature, I learned from books, from others, or I learned the hard way (mostly the hard way). I readily absorbed all I could about the natural history and geography of the northeast, and my journeys eventually took me as far north as Labrador. There are few corners of the Northeast I haven't stuck my nose in (at one point I tried to catalog all of the hiking locations using Caltopo's mapping app, but there were so many pins to place that I overloaded the server). In 1994, dissatisfied with my career, I quit my job and through-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Eventually I began working for non-profit land trusts as a way to spend time in the woods and give back to what I love. I started writing poetry on the trail as a way of processing my experience. These days I write about hiking (and occasionally still write poetry and fiction). In 2000, I took up shoeless (true barefoot) hiking, and in 2013 I began to cultivate a yoga practice. My academic background includes a B.A., M.F.A (creative writing), and an M.R.P. (Master's in Regional Planning, focus on conservation planning including public access design and policy, and land conservation law).

Advertising on Northeast Mountain People and Requests for Gear Reviews:
I am just starting to get my feet under me with regard to how I manage advertising. Right now, I'm running Google AdSense ads. As I expand my readership I'm hoping to offer standard advertising options directly to the outdoor gear manufacturing and outdoor adventure service industries. At this low-tech stage, I'm open to reasonable duration-based and placement-based offers. I can craft simple, custom ads or adopt existing suitable ads. Please reach out to me to discuss.
If you have gear that you would like me to review, please reach out.
